Blockchain District onboards more partners

The Blockchain District or an eco-system Telangana government has conceptualised with like-minded partners to support work at different levels on the emerging technology is set to gain momentum with more entities on Saturday formalising their commitment to the initiative.

Their commitments were in the form of physical space to be made available to host start-ups working in the area of blockchain, for training programmes and seminars, encourage research in the field and provide mentoring services.

Exchanging documents with Indian School of Business (ISB), IIIT-Hyderabad, blockchain technology firm Bitfury and MLR Institute of Technology, the entities that have extended support for the programme, Industries and IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said Intel has also agreed to be a part of the capacity building initiative.

Addressing the programme, organised as the annual Digital Identity Conference 2019, the senior official said guidelines will be issued shortly on how to make use of the facilities and the physical space. “We will be working out the protocols on how to select eligible companies and start-ups, who benefits in which ways, how is mentorship assigned,” he said. IT company Tech Mahindra has created a 25-seater facility for blockchain; IIIT-H has offered space in its CIE’s Innovation Lab; ISB has agreed to provide six work stations and MLRIT has offered innovation space as well, he added. IIIT-H has also decided to set up a Chair.

Mr.Ranjan also launched the logo, which was selected based on a competition conducted among students of Jawaharlal Nehru College of Fine Arts and Architecture (JNAA), Hyderabad, and the website of the Blockchain District.

A release said the government had conceptualised the Blockchain District after several rounds of consultations with industry and academia. The objective is to make Hyderabad one of the top 10 cities in terms of blockchain technology ecosystem by proactively driving key initiatives for developing talent pool, infrastructure, research and innovation and community building. Government of Telangana, IIITH, C-DAC and Tech Mahindra are the founding members. The Bitfury Group will establish a research and innovation centre in Hyderabad and offer courses, necessary incubation and mentoring support to all associated members. ISB professor Bhagwan Chowdhary said the B-school will dedicate a physical space for Blockchain District lab. It will also offer access to investor network and business expertise.
